Civilopedia entry[]

The Protestant Reformation rethought the relationship between the believer and their church. As the Catholic Church positioned itself as the sole interpreter of the divine, it established a political structure that went above and beyond that of earthly kings – naturally, Catholics were bound to a higher authority. However, Martin Luther and other Protestants posited that individuals could cultivate a personal relationship with the divine. This approach ran on the back of an urbanizing society, which drew on and contributed to popular literacy; Protestants made sure the Bible was available in vernacular languages for everyday understanding.

But religious reformation spans past those Christian and European examples. Within Southeast Asia, Theravada Buddhism offered something similar to Protestantism; whereas Mahayana in the region had focused on the divine right of the elite, allowing the populace to continue traditions they had practiced for millennia, Theravada strove to educate everyone (actually, only boys) in the basic principles of the religion and provide some degree of literacy. Meanwhile, Islam lacked an establishment akin to the Catholic Church, so there was no need for a reform along Luther’s lines as Muslims who sought piety were already expected to read and study scripture for themselves.
