Civilopedia entry[]

The Mexican Revolution, or the Revolución to Spanish-speakers, began in 1910 and throughout the following period, it reshaped the state of Mexico and the identity of its people. Beginning with popular uprisings focused on wealth inequality and the consolidation of land in the hands of the few, the revolution cycled through a series of leaders, violent coups, and in 1917, resulted in one of the most radical constitutions yet written at the time, granting universal suffrage to all men, promising land reform, and guaranteeing expansive labor rights. These reforms would not be fully implemented until 1940, and this period of change was marked by a wealth of artistic output as the population and the leadership came to terms with change.

Mexico’s revolution was one of the first political uprisings to be documented visually. Photojournalism was a relatively new practice that found ample material in the revolution, preserving a visual record of the people and causes of the fight. Painting and illustration flourished, reflecting caricatures and portraits of the many strong personalities involved throughout the revolution. The most lasting artistic form of the revolution, however, was the mural. Prolific muralists like Diego Rivera were encouraged by revolutionary leaders to depict ideology in visual form, speaking to the large illiterate population, the bourgeoisie, and an international audience alike. Their work spanned the streets of Mexican cities, reflecting the vivid experiences and idealistic dreams of the people.

Not only did these art forms reflect the revolution, but they represented and constructed a new independent identity of the Mexican people, separate from the colonial past. Today, the Revolution and its cultural impact stands as a touchstone for Mexico itself - an expressive, vibrant place of many people and ideas that is, ultimately, free.
