Civilopedia entry[]

Two major internal conflicts shaped the history of modern Mexico – the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920). In both cases, revolucionario (revolutionaries) arose to challenge a status quo they felt was holding back the nation, and they claimed power to change the course of its future.

After three hundred years of Spanish rule, the War of Independence emerged from several armed conflicts across the country. The Napoleonic Wars had weakened Spain, and growing national identity across Mexico came to a head with a widespread but unsuccessful revolt in 1810. This uprising was quickly put down, but the sentiments of its leader, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, inspired the population toward additional acts of protest and violence, resulting in an alliance between two leading forces in 1821. This force finally overcame the colonial Spanish government and heralded the founding of independent Mexico.

One century later, revolution ignited once more, this time against the dictatorial rule of Porfirio Díaz. Although Díaz soon went into exile, the ensuing decade saw several presidents acquire and lose power as the country was engulfed with conflict over political, social, and economic factors, including redistribution of land among the peasant class and expanded rights for indigenous populations. While the war ended in 1920, conflict continued on for years as factions sought to secure the Revolution’s central goals.
