Civilopedia entry[]
Putting spin on a projectile allows it to fly straighter. This is true for everything, including bullets, arrows, and (American) footballs. But how does one spin a bullet? The answer lies in the spiral grooves inside a rifle's barrel. While musket balls often flew wildly, a spiraling rifle bullet could fly straighter and farther, allowing for entirely new kinds of warfare. The musket-toting line infantry, whose tactic was to advance as far as they dared before unleashing a deadly torrent of fire, was now vulnerable to concealed snipers.
The first mass-produced rifles appeared on the American frontier in the 18th century and were increasingly used across the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The development of breech-loading guns with encased cartridges in the later 19th century set the stage for subsequent phases of warfare, most notably in the deadly exchanges that began in the 20th century.
