A 2nd Century settlement, Riga became an early Middle Age trading outpost along the Dvina-Dnieper River trade route to Byzantium. The city prospered as a member of the Hanseatic League in the High Middle Ages. Today it is the largest city of the Baltic states and capital of Latvia.
