By constructing roads between cities you can move any unit any distance along it for only a single action point. Note that any civilization can use roads, not just the creator, so be careful about roads near your opponents because they can use them to attack you as well.
The materials from which roads are made change as you advance through the eras.
- Ancient Era: Sand
- Medieval Era: Cobblestone
- Industrial Era: Brick
- Modern Era: Asphalt

Gold can be spent to connect cities with roads.

In the later eras, sand roads are replaced by cobblestone, brick, and asphalt roads.
