Civilopedia entry[]

Some would say city planning is a modern innovation. They are incorrect. Grid cities existed as far back as 2600 BCE in Harappa, in the Indus River Valley, and across Classical antiquity. Cities such as Persepolis were monuments to the learning, forward-thinking, and prestige of the builder. The Abbasids were no different.

Thousands of years later, Baghdad, “god’s gift,” was a monumentally planned city. Around 765 CE, Caliph al-Mansūr constructed the round city, which contained the residence of the Abbasid court, the House of Wisdom, the principal Abbasid mosque, and the Abbasid palace. The city was a testament to the divine right of the caliphs to rule their empire, the Dar al-Islam (the Muslim world), as well as all enlightened peoples. Wave after wave of invasion and destruction, by no less than Genghis Khan, proved otherwise.
