Rubber is indigenous to the New World, where it was used to make the balls for the famous Mesoamerican ball game. It was not until the 1700s that rubber joined sugar, coffee, and tea as one of the crops to be collected and intensified for colonial industrial production. It is worth noting that London’s Kew Gardens and Singapore’s Botanic Gardens are separated in their construction by just a few years – trial crops (especially, in this case, rubber) were often sent to colonial outposts to see how they might fare in different environments. As a result, rubber plantations in colonies acquired a dark reputation, especially in the Belgian Congo, as sites of horrific violence against workers by colonial administrations.

Rubber became vital for use in automotive parts, footwear, flooring, and a thousand other applications that demand water-resistant, flexible materials.
