Civilopedia entry[]
The Ruhr describes a river and its valley located in western Germany. However, the term became synonymous with Germany’s industrial revolution of the region. In the 1700s, industrialists built mills along waterways and exploited the region’s coal resources to produce high-quality iron and steel. By World War I, the region was the beating heart of Germany’s industry, including weapons manufacturing.
Targeting the Ruhr was a vital part of Allied strategy during World War II. Bombing pushed production to a standstill, and the region took several decades to recover. When it had, the world had, partially, moved on from coal-powered heavy industries. It remains a piece of Germany’s industrial cultural heritage.
