The Russian people represent Russia, a default civilization in Civilization II.

Color[]

The Russians are a white civilization. A game including the Russians will not involve the Romans, Celts, or Incas.

Leaders[]

Lenin and Catherine the Great (Civ2)

The default male leader of the Russians is Lenin, the alias of Vladimir Ulyanov (1870–1924), the communist revolutionary and politician who overthrew the democratic government that overthrew the tsar in 1917 during the chaos of the First World War. As Russia was not remotely industrialized enough to be suitable for traditional Marxism, Lenin advocated an adaption that involved a vanguard communist party exerting dictatorial powers to force the country's further development. Experiments with state-controlled capitalism were undertaken but abandoned in favor of full state planning.

The default female leader is Catherine the Great (1729–1796), a German princess who overthrew her husband and presided over a Russian golden age, as Enlightenment policies and rapid military conquests were undertaken by noble favorites including Orlov, Potemkin, Suvorov, and Ushakov. She oversaw the partition of Poland and colonization of Alaska, but her accomplishments were achieved by increased exactions from the peasantry which led to several rebellions.

Russian leaders use governments' default titles except under monarchy and fundamentalism. A Russian king or queen is known as a "czar" (male) or "czarina" (female). A Russian high priest or priestess is known as a "patriarch" (male) or "matriarch" (female).

Personality[]

The Russian AI is aggressive and militaristic.

The default list of Russian city names is:

The list consists of an assortment of cities from all over the former Soviet Union.

Tblisi and Tiflis are both names for the same city, now spelled Tbilisi; Tiflis also appears as an Arab city when that civilization is modded into the game. Kishenev is a misspelling of Kishinev, the Russian name of Chisinau, capital of Moldova. Murim is a misspelling of Murom, an ancient city in Russia. Several cities retain their Soviet-era names (Sverdlovsk for Yekaterinburg, Kuibyshev for Samara, Kalinin for Tver, Stalingrad for Volgograd, Gorki for Nizhny Novgorod, Voroshilovgrad for Lugansk/Luhansk), even though Civ 1’s Leningrad is properly restored as St. Petersburg.

Scenarios[]

Russia is an uninhabited source of barbarians in The Rise of Rome.

In the World War II scenario, Russia is a communist state under Stalin (using Lenin's picture).

Other[]

The High Council's foreign minister is dressed and speaks like a parody of a Soviet spy during modernity, similar to Natasha Fatale in Rocky and Bullwinkle.
