Civilopedia entry[]

The Nepali name for Chomolungma, Tibetan for “Mother of the World,” is Sagarmatha, “Goddess of the Sky”. The English, and perhaps more familiar, name is Mount Everest.

Nepal exists in the shadow of the great mountains, peaks that scrape moisture from the skies and in so doing shape the ecology and geology of the planet. The winds that blow hot and moist across the Indian subcontinent drop their moisture here, creating dense and fertile valleys on the southern side of the peaks, and the dry highlands of Tibet on the northern side. It is a division that shapes society as well – lowland and highland, rivers and upland desert, Hindu Nepalis and Buddhist Tibetans.
