Civilopedia entry[]

What is the public sphere? Today it might be defined as a loose conglomeration of media outlets, chance conversations, or some aggregate of private discourse. However, nothing embodies the idea of “the public” like the French salon from before, during, and after the Revolution. In the salon, groups of people would come together to discuss literature, music, and art, but most importantly political philosophy and the events of the day. This was where ideas that were vital to the Revolution were discussed, challenged, and elaborated on – and, at times, plans were put into action. Organizations such as the Jacobin Club – the fire behind much of the Revolution – got their start in salons, before they took to the scaffold.

Salons were especially important as places where women could advocate publicly for social transformations, and figures like Olympe de Gouges, author of the “Declaration of the Rights of Women,” used the French salons as places of debate and discussion for issues ranging from universal suffrage and the abolition of slavery to the works of writers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau. As much as they were starting points for revolutions, salons were also targeted by the Revolution – due to de Gouges' association with a more moderate faction, she lost her head to the guillotine.
