Samoderzhaviye – autocracy – was one of the key pillars of Tsarist Russian conservative thought. Whereas other powers experimented with having power spread out between advisors or popular rule, under the philosophy of samoderzhaviye, what the tsar said went. And if the tsar was lazy, incompetent, or ill-informed, this was a liability.
