Civilopedia entry[]
In a saw pit, men cut logs into planks. This is a long, laborious process made infinitely easier by the application of early machinery, which began in Byzantium in the early first millennium CE. Running water could turn a wheel – via connecting rods or a gear train – to move a stone or wooden saw that could cut through logs without human labor. Other forms of mills existed, namely those powered by wind, animals, or even human labor.
Mills are historically important as an early example of mechanical engineering put to practical commercial use. Miniature mill technology exists within automobiles, trains, helicopters, and more, converting rotary motion to lateral motion (and vice-versa).
