Civilopedia entry[]
According to the Egyptians, the dead were judged by the god Anubis, the black jackal-headed magistrate of the afterlife. He protected cemeteries and the dead, keeping out the twin menaces of his kin, the jackals and putrefaction, and making evident the promises of eternal life. But first, the dead hearts were weighed against the feather of Ma’at, the goddess of harmony, justice, and morality. Should a heart be too heavy, the dead person was cast down to be devoured by the corpse-eater, Ammit (and, later, Khonsu, the god of the moon). Should the heart be light, the dead person continued to Osiris and the immortal land of Sekhet-Aaru.
The scales of Anubis are a key symbol in renderings of Egyptian afterlife, portraying the dead’s successful transition to immortality. At least, one hopes.
