How do you use Shì Dàfū? |
Civilopedia entry[]
In ancient China, before the rise of the Han dynasty, two social classes separated the aristocracy from the common people: the Shì, scholars, and the Dàfū, officials. The latter ranked higher, but the Shì proved more valuable due to the nature of their knowledge and advice, and the two ranks eventually converged into a single class of scholar-officials. The Shì Dàfū often emerged from noble families and obtained power through recommendation. In addition to their bureaucratic duties, their academic pursuits varied widely, from philosophy and history to science and mathematics. Their Confucian education enabled them to integrate their values into the government and provide guidance to the larger populace.
