Civilopedia entry[]
The Sherpa are a Buddhist and Tibetan ethnic minority native to highland areas of Nepal, India and Bhutan. Here, they have historically been able to survive at the highest elevations. They quickly achieved a reputation for being able to brave the land’s highest peaks, and the name became synonymous with intrepid highland explorers, one of the most famous of which is Tenzing Norgay, one of the pair of people to first reach the summit of Mount Everest. Today, Sherpa are deeply involved in Nepal’s tourist industry, especially in guiding hikers around the country’s highest peaks.
