Civilopedia entry[]
A core pillar of Confucian thought is that individuals should be appointed by merit, not by lineage or other arbitrary considerations. To this end, China, for most of its history, relied upon the imperial examination system, a series of tests focusing on writing, reading the classics, and language. The tests required that all high-ranking officials were literate in a common culture. This system was one reason for China’s stability over the years. Foreigners could become Chinese through a deep knowledge and investment in Chinese culture, ensuring that even with invasion, civil war, or other disruption, the structure of society could maintain a common thread.
During the Qing era, this system went through multiple changes. Qing, a Manchu and not Han dynasty, sought to promote Manchu language and ethnicity in the upper ranks, and established ethnic quotas for graduates. As the 19th century marched on, the content of these examinations fell under question, as reformers sought to include Western sciences and mathematics within the curriculum.
The system was abolished in 1905, to be replaced by public school degrees.
