The frigate was the star of the Napoleonic Wars. A classic frigate had only one gun deck, but what it lacked in firepower it made up for in operational range. This benefit was especially valuable as frigates belonging to colonial powers were tasked with managing wars that could span the globe – all the more impressive for a sail-powered vessel. Most frigates had between 20 to 40 guns and could deliver a devastating broadside assault.

While classic frigates were light, some of the late-era ships were massive. The British navy found success with the Endymion-class frigates during the Napoleonic Wars. Meanwhile, the HDMS Jylland was a hulking 2500-ton hybrid steam and sailship launched by the Danish navy for use against Austrian and Prussian fleets.
