Civilopedia entry[]
A shore battery is a collection of artillery on the coast tasked with defending against naval attacks. They rose to prominence during the Age of Discovery when coastal fortresses were used as a deterrent to seafaring threats. Advancements in artillery technology increased the size and range of these cannons, and the batteries often used naval guns repurposed for terrestrial use. Shore batteries were so impactful that for several centuries, territorial waters were defined by the range of coastal artillery – the three-mile limit was so called because according to international law, maximum artillery range was roughly three nautical miles. After World War II, the rise of air and guided missiles rendered shore batteries largely obsolete, though they have found situational use in ensuing decades.
