Civilopedia entry[]

Shwedagon Zedi Daw (the Golden Dagon Pagoda), also simply known as Shwedagon Phaya, is a gold-covered stupa that rises 59 feet above the skyline of Yangon, Burma. It reportedly contain relics of former Buddhas: the staff of Kakusandha, the water filter of Konagamana, the robe of Kassapa, and strands of hair from Gautama (the Buddha we normally think of). According to tradition, the stupa was built during the lifetime of the Buddha, nearly 2,500 years ago, although there is no record of the stupa until the 14th century CE. It is the most important site in Burmese Buddhism and is significant in Theravada Buddhism (mainland Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka).

At the time of its construction, Burma was ruled by the Mon people, and a Mon king likely built Shwedagon Zedi Daw. Over time, the stupa was filled with relics of significance to the Mon and later the Burmans, becoming a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists the world over.

Trivia[]

  • Shwedagon Zedi Daw's wonder quote comes from Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, founder of Buddhism, although its veracity is disputed.
