Many insects, and some arachnids, produce silk: fine, hyper-strong filaments with a unique structure that causes them to shimmer in the light. This material is used to form the cocoons in which larvae transform into full-fledged adults – that is, if people let them. Silk from these cocoons has been used since nearly the Neolithic in a variety of places, from East Asia to Mesoamerica, but the silkworm saw its greatest use in China. Chinese silk production dates back to the earliest dynasties and grew in earnest during the Han. Silk was traded along the route named for the commodity and found markets (as well as new growing grounds) in Korea, Southeast Asia, India, and beyond. Indeed, silk markets grew both east and west, with silk adorning sultans’ robes, saris, European furnishings, Laotian sin, and a variety of goods in between.
