How do you use Silver? |
Civilopedia entry[]
One of the most ancient metals known to humanity, pure silver is bright and glossy, making it attractive to the earliest people. Near Eastern societies used silver to create some of the first metal art; they also used it as a currency. Silver differs a little from gold, as the latter easily retains its splendor (meaning it does not oxidize), so gathering large quantities of silver requires refining (in this case, heating to a high temperature to extract pure metal from base metals). Even before recorded history, this technique was used in places as diverse as Japan, Egypt, India, and the Mediterranean, where Phoenician traders were instrumental in moving silver from places of production to places of wealth. In the era of colonization, silver, not gold, formed the backbone of the Spanish mines in South America, where it was then traded en masse to China in exchange for Chinese luxury goods.
