Strategy[]
The Sloop is a valuable
Economic asset thanks to its ability to plunder
Trade Routes and attack enemy
Units without formally declaring
War.
Not only can this easily sabotage enemy expansion or territorial control (although doing it too frequently will still incur
Relationship penalties), it also grants
Gold when defeating
Naval Units, enabling reliable
Gold generation and strong control over Coastal and Ocean regions.
Civilopedia entry[]
On the horizon, a sloop is almost immediately recognizable – a triangular mass of sails almost obscuring the thin, knifelike hull beneath. Defined mostly by its rigging – a single mast with a mainsail, and a sail or sails mounted in the fore, a sloop is built for speed. Its shallow draft meant that it could sail across treacherous waters where more heavily-built ships might founder, and the extensive sails meant that it was extremely fast. It may have lacked the heavy cargo holds or firepower of a larger ship, but the sloop was perfect for quick raids – and quick escapes.
