Civilopedia entry[]
“Society” has come to stand in for many things, but like the term “public,” “society” refers to a collective – a group with its own norms, rules, codes of conduct, and opinions. Societies require a forum where these norms are voiced, and they have a common understanding of how things should work. Widespread literacy and the growth of newspapers – along with an increasing standardization of mechanized time and life around factories – meant that even a widely dispersed population could have a common perspective. If multiple people read the same paper, they understood the day’s events in similar ways, even if their individual takes on these events differed. Even before this, standardized religious sermons, public announcements, the growth of universities, and the steady increase in urban life led to the development of a social consciousness, something we could term “society.”
