Civilopedia entry[]
As the modern era progressed, various empires developed an interest in the past. In Britain, the Society of Antiquaries was established in 1707 to discuss history, largely of Britain, amongst (nascent) archaeologists and other learned people. That this establishment should be necessary and novel might be easily overlooked; knowledge about the past and the idea that the past is necessarily something interesting have not always been present in England, as in many places, and the society reflected a growing awareness of the forces and stories that changed Britain over time.
The Society is still present, and publishes various journals, both popular and scholarly.
