Civilopedia entry[]
The sokeman was a type of tenant in Norman England who owned and paid taxes on their land while providing service to their lords through support at court. The origins of the sokeman emerge from the earlier Danelaw, the large territory in England that operated under Norse, rather than Anglo-Saxon, law. At that time, there were two dominant forms of agricultural tenants: villeins who worked their lord’s land in exchange for a plot of their own, and free tenants who rented their land and were exempt from certain laws. Sokemen existed between these two categories, having more direct control over their land while serving their lord by lending them additional backing in the court of law.
