Civilopedia entry[]
The Mexican Revolution was a decade-long conflict between multiple power groups, beginning with the collapse of the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz. In 1911, Díaz had jailed a prominent opponent, a wealthy landowner from the north of Mexico who had launched a rebellion against Díaz and his “Porfiriato” – and won. This sparked a series of rebellions, reactions, coups, and attempted coups that eventually settled into a period of stability that has lasted from 1920 to the present day.
Female soldiers and army attendants, or soldaderas, played a key role in these conflicts. These varied across different armies and theaters of the revolution, from bands of female soldiers to camp followers to the wives and children of soldiers, thus increasing cohesion – and the humaneness – of soldiers in a chaotic battlefield. Famous soldaderas of the southern revolutionaries included Petra Herrera (a soldier in Pancho Villa’s army) and Ángela Jiménez (a master of demolitions).
