Civilopedia entry[]
A professional army is a luxury few ancient empires could afford. Persia could. This body of warriors was the spada. Greek accounts often over-exaggerated Persia's might to frame Greek victories as epic affairs; Greek reports claim that Xerxes' army was composed of three million warriors, but it was likely a tenth of that size. Regardless, the spada was comprised of infantry, cavalry (horse or camel), chariots (largely obsolete by Persian times), and often included Greek mercenaries, though the core of the spada was Iranian.
The spada was divided in a decimal system – ten men in a company, ten companies in a battalion, ten battalions in a division, and ten divisions in a corps, all under the King of Kings.
