The Spanish are a yellow civilization in Civilization II. They are led by Philip II (male) and Isabella (female), following a Rational, Expansionist, Militaristic personality.
Overview[]
Color[]
The Spanish are a yellow civilization, and act fourth in turn order. A game including the Spanish will not involve the Aztecs or Egyptians.
Leaders[]
The default Spanish male leader is Philip II (1527–1598), a Habsburg king of Spain, Portugal, Naples, and Sicily, and jure exoris king of England and Ireland, as well as Duke of Milan and Lord of the Netherlands. The son of and successor to Charles V, he inherited a world-spanning empire, with the conquest of the Incan Empire and Philippines completed during his rule. However, he squandered its wealth and position in failed attempts to curtail the Protestant English and Dutch, presiding over repeated bankruptcies despite the influx of silver from Mexico and Peru.
The default female leader is Isabella (1451–1504), Trastamara queen of Castile and Leon, wife of Ferdinand II of Aragon, and great-grandmother to Philip II. Flush with wealth from efficient administration, expropriation of Jewish funds, and the conquest of Granada at the end of the Reconquista, she was persuaded to sponsor Christopher Columbus's voyages of exploration, which established a Spanish empire stretching across Central and South America. Her marriage policies united her family and lands with the Habsburg domains in central Europe, but the Crown's desire for Catholic conformity within post-Reconquista territories prompted the creation of the Spanish Inquisition.
Titles[]
Spanish leaders feature one unique government title: a Fundamentalist is titled an "Archbishop".
Personality[]
The Spanish AI is Rationa, Expansionist, and Militaristic: it conducts peaceful diplomacy, preferring to settle many cities, while prioritizing military advances for research.
Cities[]
Scenarios[]
Spain (or its historical predecessors) features in the original scenarios provided with Civilization II:
- In The Rise of Rome, Spain is largely unsettled. The Celts have a city in the north at Numantia, while the Carthaginians have an outpost on the southern coast at Gades.
- In World War II, Spain is an amalgamation of the Spanish State and Second Portuguese Republic, led by Francisco Franco. It features late Industrial technology and a small military, and typically remains neutral unless provoked.
Modding[]
The Spanish are defined at Line 18 of the @LEADERS section of Rules.txt. Leader portraits are stored in Images 28 (GIFS/237) (male) and 49 (GIFS/258) (female) in mk.dll; their herald file is HRLDSPA.AVI.
