How do you use Spearman? |
Civilopedia entry[]
Spears have been in use as long as humans have hunted for food. The idea is simple – keep your enemy (or prey) at a distance while you thrust the pointy end of a stick at them. Here, the spear represents bronze weapons, made famous in Homer’s Iliad. Spears were the weapon of choice for much of antiquity and the Middle Ages. The Greek hoplite is famous for its spear-craft, but history has seen many other versions, including the Roman throwing spear (the pilum), the African iron spear (the assegai), the Chinese mao, and the Maasai sword-spear. In the New World, Aztecs and others utilized long staves tipped with razor-sharp obsidian, which was less durable than bronze but far sharper. Meanwhile, Polynesians crafted spears from sharks’ teeth. The advent of the firearm finally moved spears and their later equivalents out of the battlefield.
