In the period between the Napoleonic Wars and the 20th century, it was British policy to avoid entangling itself in permanent alliances with other powers. From a British perspective, this approach made a great deal of sense: their power at sea was unquestioned, but Europe remained a potentially messy tangle of alliances and rivalries, and the English Channel presented a natural barrier to any direct assault. From there, Britain could look upon Europe, secure in its strength, in splendid isolation, although the lack of close allies eventually drove British interests back to standard diplomacy.
