Civilopedia entry[]
Transportation in the early 19th century required muscle. Moving quantities of goods over land was usually performed by animals pulling carts. This was not an ideal form of transportation, but more efficient modes of transport, such as railcars, required massive investment in infrastructure and material. In that area, Prussia and other parts of Germany excelled. The Prussian state railways, the Staatseisenbahnen, were a collection of private rail lines that crisscrossed the state, revolutionizing logistics and economic development to catapult Prussia to the fore of the industrialized world. These private concerns were nationalized in 1880 to increase standardization, leading to the development of massive, beautiful stations and a more modernized economy.
