Civilopedia entry[]
Steel, an alloy of iron and carbon, was discovered thousands of years ago. Though highly valued, it was expensive to produce until the development of the Bessemer process in 1856. Only nine years later, in 1865, America built its first steel mill in Troy, New York, kicking off a massive boom in steel production that soon surpassed the rest of the world. The rapid growth of the nation’s infrastructure heightened the demand for steel, which was used in the construction of buildings, railways, bridges, vehicles, and machinery. American steel was exported all over the world, and its dominance remained untouched by World War II, allowing the industry's global importance to peak. In the years that followed, other countries began to compete in production, but not before the dominance of U.S. steel had ushered the nation into modernity.
