Civilopedia entry[]

Pyramid structures frequently appeared across the ancient world, and while their functions varied from civilization to civilization, many central themes remained the same. Pyramids are structurally stable and could be built to monumental proportions more easily than other architectural designs. Their upward reach speaks to the near-universal human association of the heavens with the divine. Building step pyramids is particularly straightforward. In Egypt, step pyramids predated the more famous straight-sided structures, and they were built as tombs for pharaohs and influential people. Chinese pyramids in the Henan and Shaanxi provinces were also used as tombs for early rulers during the Han Dynasty and beyond. The ziggurats of Mesopotamia acted as religious sites topped with temples and shrines; considered dwelling places of the gods, they were accessible only to priests. Mesoamerican pyramids were also sites of worship and sacrifice; their positions were often dictated by celestial bodies. In all cases, constructing pyramids required immense wealth and labor, and they were designed as symbols of power, inspiring awe among peoples both ancient and modern.
