Civilopedia entry[]
The vav, or stepwell, has been an irrigation tool of India and Pakistan for centuries. The concept is simple: dig a well down to a water table, but instead of lowering a bucket into the dark hole, provide steps for people to climb and haul water. Stepwells are especially important in places with highly variable water tables, like monsoon India, and were built long before the Mughal Empire. Nonetheless, they were an important feature of everyday life for many, providing a source of water and a place for villagers to socialize. Today, many stepwells have significantly reduced water levels, as a mixture of climate change and intensifying human demands have depleted water tables across the region.
