Civilopedia entry[]

Stock exchanges were founded upon the principles of investment and money lending. These establishments became important during the early era of colonialism, as voyages posed a significant risk to ship owners. Sending a ship overseas could be incredibly lucrative, but the vessel could simply vanish, taking that investment to the bottom of the ocean. A group of lenders offered to defray some of these costs in exchange for a cut of the ship’s profits – and the modern stock was born. The first stock exchange was founded in London in 1773, and the New York Stock Exchange followed a few years later. In theory, these exchanges democratized wealth, allowing those without capital to invest in an entire business to venture a piece of the profits. In practice, exchanges often led to the growth of larger and larger business ventures, widening wealth gaps.
