Civilopedia entry[]
Stone heads have been a common theme among sculptors throughout history. Representations of the human face not only preserve the symbol of individuality but capture the face's ability to communicate without words. As a result, these sculptures are often explorations of identity, both human and divine. While stone heads were created in ancient times – including the huge mysterious Olmec heads – many variations emerged through the medieval period and beyond. The moai of Rapa Nui are the most famous of these statues. Their immense forms represent the living faces of Polynesian ancestors, and they face inland, keeping a watchful gaze over the land and its people. For centuries, Celtic artists in Europe carved smaller heads that varied widely in appearance and style. Their prevalence is ascribed to the head's sacred symbolism in religious beliefs and went hand-in-hand with the Celts’ keen enthusiasm for headhunting. West Africa saw the creation of the mahe-yafei, a type of soapstone carving by the Kisi people thought to have originally represented ancestors, like the moai. However, these carvings have taken on new meanings in modern times, and are now honored by the Mende as agricultural deities.
