Civilopedia entry[]
Masonry has been a component of city-building since cities were first constructed – even before, as sites such as Stonehenge can attest. Medieval tools involved precise chisels and mallets. Societies such as the Inca were masters of stonework, fitting block atop block, each one so perfectly carved that their walls did not need mortar to hold together. In fact, the Inca were so careful to read rocks that they often split stones along natural seams. While East Asian cities often relied upon wood for all but military fortifications, in the European Middle Ages, stone cathedrals became a point of pride and city piety, and were often lucrative pilgrimage destinations as well as monuments to a higher power.
