Back to Unit (Civ7)
Back to Combat (Civ7)
Strength is a measurement of the fighting prowess of a military unit in Civilization VII and its expansions. There are four different types of Strength, which can be modified by factors such as social policies, terrain, and other elements in the game:
Combat Strength determines how much damage a unit inflicts with melee attacks and how much damage it sustains when defending against attacks of any sort. Notably, the terms "Strength" and "Combat Strength" are sometimes used interchangeably.
Ranged Strength determines how much damage a unit inflicts with ranged attacks against land units.
Bombard Strength determines how much damage a unit inflicts with ranged attacks against naval units and fortifications.
Defense Strength is unique to certain civilian units, such as Scouts and Commanders. It determines how much damage a unit sustains when defending against attacks of any sort. The
Defense Strength of military units is the same as their
Combat Strength.
Attacks that use Ranged Strength or
Bombard Strength cannot be retaliated against, unlike melee attacks. However, ranged units do not advance onto the target tile after eliminating an enemy, meaning they cannot capture a fortification or
Settlement directly — another unit must move onto the tile to complete the capture.
Strength should not be confused with hit points (HP), which determine how much damage a unit can sustain before dying.
