Civilopedia entry[]
The German Junkers Ju 87 or "Stuka" was a ground-attack aircraft deployed in World War II, and was primarily used to disrupt shipping during the first few years of the conflict. The Stuka was designed to drop bombs as it dove toward the ground at an incredible velocity; it even included automatic recovery systems in case the pilot blacked out. Imagine the shock of a Stuka strike – its sirens blaring as it descends hundreds of feet in seconds, pulling away at the last minute. It would have been a terrifying strike for both pilot and target alike.
That steep, precipitous drop revealed a vulnerability within the Stuka design. Heavy bombers flew at a high altitude with a contingent of protective fighters; what they lacked in accuracy they made up for in relative pilot safety. However, hitting specific targets forced pilots to leave this formation and rendered them vulnerable to the increasingly sophisticated fighters of the era. By the end of the war, the era of dogfighting and dive-bombing was replaced by rockets and remote artillery – ominous signs for the ICBM arms race to come.
