Civilopedia entry[]
Hammers and axes are tools. Spears and bows can be used to hunt as much as to kill other humans. But a sword is truly a soldier’s weapon. Around 3000 BCE, the sword evolved from large daggers, clearly a weapon of conflict. They could be single- or double-edged, curved (to more easily cut an enemy’s body), or straight (ideal for stabbing). Some had wicked hooks (the Egyptian kopesh) or tremendous blades (the Germanic longsword or Chinese zhanmadao). The most famous swords were those made from steel with a particular hardness – Damascus steel or the famous Japanese katana. Importantly, swords required skill and training. A swordsman was not a farmer with a spear, but a skilled warrior was dangerous with any weapon.
