Civilopedia entry[]
Tactics, from the Greek meaning “to move, to order,” refers to the deployment of military units close to the battlefield. It differs from strategy, which involves the waging of war as a whole. While strategists are interested in supply lines, logistics, and large-scale movements, tacticians want to direct the action on a single battlefield. In military science, tactics involve certain traits: kinetic power, speed, shock, and protection. Most of these are self-evident. Kinetic power involves the damaging effects of weapons while protection focuses on the mitigating influence of armor. Shock measures psychological impact – a unit of charging elephants has a great deal of psychological leverage.
The British at Agincourt displayed tactical deftness when their incessant volley of arrows caused both morale and personal damage to the French. Similarly, the Mongol hordes displayed a classical tactical maneuver when they pretended to flee, tempting a counter-charge that was soon ambushed on multiple sides by concealed Mongol horse archers. Tactical thinking involves waiting for opportunities to strike, anticipating opponent reactions, and adjusting accordingly. Tactics win battles; strategy wins wars.
