Civilopedia entry[]
Often listed as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, the Taj Mahal is actually a tomb. It was commissioned in 1631 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the force behind Delhi’s Red Fort and other impressive building projects. The space contains gardens and a mosque, and houses the body of the emperor’s favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, as well as the shah himself (almost as an afterthought). Built in the distinctive Mughal style, it combines Persian and Hindu designs, reflecting those dual influences within Mughal society at large. Many recognize the structure thanks to its great onion dome composed of marble.
Today, the Taj Mahal is a symbol of India, perhaps surprising given the ambivalence that many Hindus feel about the Mughal period. Yet it remains a powerful icon of love, loss, and the hope that beauty can outlive us.
Trivia[]
- The Taj Mahal's wonder quote comes from the 1930 book Civilization and its Discontents, written by Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalisis, Sigmund Freud.
