Civilopedia entry[]
Positioned along the Niger River at the heart of the Sahel, the Songhai Empire was primed to take over the trade routes that had long been managed by Mali. Local exchange took place along the river, while long-distance trade saw caravans crossing the Sahara and converging in the cities of Gao, Djenne, and Timbuktu. These merchants brought luxury goods such as glass, sugar, and horses in exchange for gold, ivory, wood, and a wide variety of locally produced commodities. Songhai military power protected the empire’s monopoly of trans-Saharan trade, enabling this influx of riches to fuel the economy and stabilize the kingdom in its formative years.
