Civ1 Gandhi behavior[]

While I recognize the following is a longstanding thought, I would like to question it:

This is intended more as a shout-out to previous games than anything else: in the original Civilization, the normally peaceful Gandhi would suddenly become extremely aggressive if he adopted a "peaceful" form of government, such as Democracy, which was often close to the time when nukes would be invented.

According to this post, the idea of Gandhi becoming aggressive was not common knowledge before Civ5. According to both Meier and Reynolds, the AI becoming aggressive was something that wasn't specifically true for Gandhi. "Gandhi nukes" shows only occasional spikes in Google trends prior to Civ5 ("Gandhi nuclear" was mostly popular in india).

So while a nuclear Gandhi was certainly something that popped up once in a while, I'm not sure mentioning this as a "shout out to previous games" is necessarily true.

As for the connection to adopting democracy, Meier mentions nukes may have been possible for Gandhi due to scientific advancement, but not specifically due to democracy. Another post in the same thread as above mentions that the AI in civ1 would not revolt to Democracy.

After some consultation of both your sources and relevant wiki pages, I've concluded that Meier's statement is accurate. The description of Democracy in Civ1 says nothing about reducing AI leaders' aggression levels, and the rumor seems to have stemmed from misconceptions. I've reworded that part of the Personality and Behavior subsection accordingly. -Mythril Wyrm (talk) 02:59, September 16, 2020 (UTC)
