Ancient era[]
They should count as an Ancient era unit since you get them as early as Ancient era.

Great General is wrong[]
The part about the Great General is wrong. Sometimes Nihangs are not buffed by Great Generals and it is not based on the latest Encampment building. There is no discernible pattern which Nihangs will be affected and which won't. It's a bug.
