Civilopedia entry[]

In archaeological circles, it has become something of a joke that if a settlement has an undefined large structure, that structure is labeled a “palace.” A second large structure gets the designation “temple,” even if the actual use of these buildings remains undetermined. A temple is a general term for a place of worship. English speakers are used to calling Christian temples "churches" and Muslim temples "mosques," but the default “temple” is used to describe structures as disparate as the Hindu mandir, the Jewish hekal, or the Buddhist wat or otera. All these structures are reserved spaces for religious practice – a place for contemplation, coming together, or other activities that stand apart in some way from the mundane world.
