Civilopedia entry[]
Of the many gods in the Roman pantheon, the most important was Jupiter, also called Jove – the king of the gods. A deity of the sky, he was associated with thunderbolts and eagles, and his worship permeated the Roman state throughout history until the arrival of Christianity in the fourth century AD. Oaths were sworn in his name, sacrifices were made for his favors, and victorious soldiers placed spoils of war before his statues.
Temples built to Jupiter were major sites of religious worship. They were centrally located in settlements across the Roman world, most prominently in Rome, where the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus dominated the Capitoline Hill. Inside each temple was a statue of Jupiter. Priests and priestesses maintained the space, which was used for rites, festivals, and quiet prayer.
