Civilopedia entry[]
Guns did not immediately sweep away the era of swords, spears, and bows. Instead, early firearms, such as the arquebus, were incorporated into existing units. Though more effective than a crossbow or arbalest, they were also slow and expensive, and arquebusiers needed protection from cavalry. The Spanish created the tercio, a unit comprised of pikemen and arquebusiers, and arranged so that arquebusiers – protected by flanking pikemen – could fire and then move to a safe place to reload. While slow, it was an effective battle formation and proved extremely effective in the wars of the 16th century. As the faster flintlock musket overtook the matchlock, and the age of pikes came to an end, the tercio eventually gave way to the classic line infantry of the 18th and 19th centuries.
